Eligibility Requirements

Ensure that you meet the eligibility requirements prior to applying.

Requirement Description
Citizenship Be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada.
Age Be 19 years of age or older.
Liability Insurance Have no less than $2,000,000 public liability insurance that is applicable to his or her angling guide business, in effect during the period for which the angling guide will operate.
Angling Guide Exam Pass Must satisfy the Regional Fish and Wildlife Manager that you have a working knowledge of the Wildlife Act and Regulations. This is done through the successful completion of the Angling Guide Exam, which requires a minimum 80% passing grade.
Reports (applies to renewals) Angling guides must report annually all guiding activity by March 31; or April 30 when there is guiding activity from March 1 - March 31.
Fees (applies to renewals) Must have paid Classified Angler day fees from previous year(s).
Angling Guide Operating Plan (Applies to Renewals) Must have a valid Angling Guide Operating Plan (AGOP). AGOPs are only required to be completed every five years (from the last date the AGOP was signed off by Regional Manager) unless it changes from the previous year, then a new AGOP must be submitted. All AGOPs must be approved by the Regional Manager.

Requirement Description When is it Required?
Angling Guide Exam The Angling Guide exam is a screening tool. A mark of 80% is required to pass the exam. However under Section 50 of the Wildlife Act, the Regional Manager must be satisfied that the applicant has a working knowledge of the Wildlife Act and Regulations and the Fisheries Act and its Regulations. This may require further consultation in addition to the exam. First time Angling Guide licence applicants require a passing grade on the Angling Guide Exam. If you have not held an Angling Guide Licence for more than 5 years a rewrite is required.
Assistant angling guide licence
  1. Must be a person who is a citizen of Canada or a permanent resident of Canada;
  2. Must be 19 years old (Regional Manager may consider application of a minor where special circumstances exist); and
  3. Be employed by a licenced Angling Guide (hiring angling guide must sign licence application form and provide guide number).
If you need help guiding your clients by hiring an assistant guide and need this licence, you will need to complete the Assistant Angling Guide Licence application. An assistant angling guide is a person licensed as such under the Wildlife Act.

Archaeology Information
Archaeological sites are protected under the Heritage Conservation Act and must not be altered or damaged without a permit issued by the Archaeology Branch. Information regarding potential risks to protected archaeological sites may be obtained by submitting an online data request form to the Archaeology Branch or by contacting a professional archaeologist via the BC Association of Professional Archaeologists (www.bcapa.ca) or via local directories.
